I admit that I was skeptical. I’d been hearing about the deep fried Mars bars that were being sold at the Ex (Saskatoon Exhibition) and at first I thought that the idea was absolutely revolting.
I’m not the biggest sweet lover and at the best of times the Mars bar strikes me as a little too sweet for my palate. Heck, given my choice of chocolates I tend to go for the 80% dark bitter chocolates instead of the more readily available sweet milk chocolate confections. And while I enjoy deep fried things as much ( or maybe a bit more) than the average joe, I couldn’t imagine liking a battered, crispy, deep fried chocolate bar.
But, in the spirit of experimentation (and the spirit of “OMG I bought a deep fryer, what can I do with this OTHER than make french fries?”) I decided to try out the idea of the Deep Fried Mars Bar.
And I learned 2 things:
1. Its not only a Saskatoon thing (thank the Gods)
and
2. Its freaking simple and totally decadent
Yeah…
Its simple to do. You get a cup of white flour and a half cup of corn flour (I had to use corn meal, but it worked relatively well), a pinch of baking soda, and enough milk to create a light cream like batter… dunk a cold (but not frozen) Mars bar… and deep fry on highest heat until the batter is crispy and golden… cool and ENJOY…
HOLY HELL… it is GOOD. And I am not the only one who thought so… my daughter ate almost an entire bar when I was washing the dishes!!! But I got a few bites, enough to know that this is something sweet and simple that I could easily serve as a kinda decadent “naughty” dessert, if I ever get to have a dinner party.
I’d suggest a nice semi-dry merlot… like my new favourite from Pelee Island Winery!!

I’ve heard of this but didn’t think it was for real. Now I know, it IS! Look forward to trying it. This is the time of year to do it, it’s cold. I don’t say that very often to people because they laugh at me (‘m in Hawaii), but hey, it snows here too!;-)
